She was born on November 24, 1914 in Hickory Virginia. She was born as a left handed person but forced to write with her right hand. A lot of her childhood was not recorded. We know that she always wanted to work in the medical feild when she younger. So she left home to New Jersey to study physical therapy.
She studied at both Panzar College of Physical Education and at Union Junior College. Then she moved on to Chicago where she finished her training. Her invention saved many lives from dieses. After her invention Bessie began a career in forensic science with law enforcement in the year of 1969. She served the departments in Vineland, New Jersey, Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1972 she promoted to become the chief documment examiner of their labortories.
1977 she became the first black womanto train and work at Scotland yard. This happened after Mr. Hoover of the FBI turned down her application. Blount ran her own business at age 83. She used the majority of her forsenic training to examine and research African-American slave "papers" and pre-civil war documents. Bessie also worked as a consultant in special investigations for many law enforcement agencies while also being a member of the South Jersey Chapter.
When she started as a nurse for World War 2 she always saw the soldiers injured badly. She had to re teach them how to walk or use their hands again. it wasnt that much of a challenge. the only thing that was real difficult to do was to get them to learn how to eat on their own. Most of them werent ever capable fo using their hands or feet again. And the eating were just to diffcult to do. So Bessie thought and thought of how she could help. Fianlly she had an idea.
So in her way to help she invented the feeding tube for amputees. She of course called it "the feeding tube for amputees" The electrical device allowed a tube to deliver one mouthful of food at a time to a patient in a wheelchair or in a bed whenever he or she bit down on the tube. It wasnt a problem for the patient to either be sitting down or laying. the invention worked either way. The cost was around 1500 to get.
This invention only helped amputees. The only effect it had on society was with the disableds. The invention saved a lot of injured peoples lives. like from dieses or helping them regain their independence on feeding themselves. so it didnt have to be done for them. The feeding tube made people spend more money. but it was safer for them to use and gave nurses time to deal with other emergencies going on in the hospital.
There was no information on her having difficulties making a feeding tube for disables. Like the cost of making the invention. I looked but no website had the information. The only setback was when she tried to market her invention, hospitals put her down. Doctors said that her invention was "to bulky" or wouldnt be able to fit inside of every disabled patients room. So with no support from the U.S. Veteran Adminstration, She decided to donate her invention to the French Government in 1952. The French put the devide to good use to help make all war amputees lives better.
Later she invented something else. The device was called "the portable receptacle supporter". This invention was made for the same thing. It was just a lot simpler smaller than the orignal. Instead of it on the floor it was a brace. It was designed to be worn around the neck. It supported a bowl, cup, or dish. which still allowed amputees to feed themselves.

The cost of a feeding tube is about 1500 to have the installation. Bessie's invention was on her own finance. She had no help. It only had an impact on amputees because theyre the only ones who needed it.It didnt make people want to spend more money on it or something on a daily basis. Just an invention that is NEEDED. Not wanted..
September 1, 1939- Beginning or World War 2.. Bessie Blount was a physical therapist in the war working with the injured soliders. Always seeing the amputees having to be fed by all the nurses. Which Inspired to do..
Same Year- Bessie came up to New York at Bronx hospital to teach physical therapy to the injured. She tried to market her invention there. But was unsucessful. Docotors told her that the invention was to big and bulky to fit in each injured patients room.
